Rich with butter and topped with a simple cinnamon streusel my family’s favorite Cinnamon Coffee Cake is both basic and compelling. Warm out of the oven it is fragrant, soft and delicious. Later in the day it is a little firmer but still wonderful. This recipe, from a card dated 1973, holds the secret formula for a coffee cake we have consistently treasured in my family for decades.

Carrot Cake with Walnuts and Maple Cream Cheese Frosting
I like the simplicity of this Carrot Cake. It relies on carrots, walnuts and spices for flavor, leaving out the sticky sweetness of pineapple and raisins that many recipes include. What’s more, this cake is moist and delicious and with four cups of carrots it might even be considered a vegetable dish. In any case, topped with Maple Frosting or Cream Cheese Frosting it makes a fantastic dessert.
Gingerbread Biscotti
A rich blend of candied ginger and holiday spices adds a lingering warmth to the robust flavor of these delicious cookies. Sweetened with molasses and brown sugar, studded with nuts and drizzled with white chocolate, Gingerbread Biscotti pair well with a warm cup of coffee. They also hold up well to dipping, if you dare.
Old-Fashioned Gingerbread
Old-Fashioned Gingerbread is a deliciously dark spice cake. This is a comfort food in my book. Each spicy mouthful, hints of festive flavors from holidays past and its moist dense texture is packed with old-fashioned appeal. It makes a perfect ending to a casual holiday meal.

Chocolate Fire Ice Cream Cupcakes
To learn how to have fun with ice cream there’s no better place to start than with children. For my cupcake recipe I turned to my vintage “Betty Crocker’s Cookbook for Boys and Girls.” It no longer has a cover or pages 1 through 8…
Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce
Cream and sugar laced with vanilla and cinnamon wrap around nuts and tangy fruit in the heart of this delicious Bread Pudding. Drizzle Bourbon Sauce over the top for a note of sweet punctuation.
Vanilla Chile Truffles
I go to Vosges Chocolat and find the inspiration to make truffles laced with the richness of vanilla cream, the exotic depth of cinnamon and the heat of two fiery ground chile peppers. I don’t have time to dip them and I don’t have the perfect garnish to make them individually gorgeous but I have chocolate and I’m making truffles and I know they’ll taste great!
Chocolate Decadence
February simply cries out for chocolate! When the Christmas holidays have become but a pleasant memory and our bodies have forgotten the overindulgence of holiday feasting, when our moods are challenged by a long succession of wet gray January days and the sweet occasion of Valentine’s Day peeps at us […]
Celebrating with a New Orleans Style King Cake
This New Orleans style King Cake is made from a cinnamon spiced yeast dough. Rolled out and stuffed with a praline filling, the dough is then shaped into a circular loaf before baking and decorating with vanilla icing and colorful sugar. As this festive cake is shared, each person searches for the “baby” that is hidden inside. Whoever finds it hidden in their slice is honored with a gift and/or the responsibility of hosting the next gathering during the Mardi Gras season.
