Slices of Gingerbread Loaf on a plate topped with Molasses Whipped Cream

Gingerbread Loaf with Marbled Whipped Cream

Gingerbread is one of my favorite flavors and a great place to begin my seasonal baking. I love the combination of spices here, including sweet cardamom, spicy pepper, warm ancho chile and rich cocoa powder. A slice of this deliciously spiced bread with a cup of coffee or warm apple cider is a wonderful way to stave off the chill of the season.

Gingerbread Cookies

One of the high points of holiday baking this year was a new recipe for Gingerbread Cookies. These cookies are festively fragrant with cinnamon and ginger and sparkle with crunchy sugar crystals. They make a nice addition to a holiday cookie plate. They also freeze well and are delicious straight out of the freezer and gingerly dipped in your morning coffee.

A pinch of ginger is the perfect way to dress up favorite recipes, both sweet and savory, for the holidays. Take these fragrant Gingerbread Scones for example. The addition of warm spices and a measure of molasses add something special on a cold winter morning. They also appeal to the senses at teatime or as an after dinner treat.

I used my small cookie scoop to form the dough for these half-sized ginger cookies, before dropping the balls into a pan of sugar to coat. The result was my idea of perfect Molasses Crinkles: small, fragrant, spicy, a bit crispy on the outside while still soft on the inside. These spicy gems offer a little taste of Christmas in every delicious bite.

Ginger has a pleasing spiciness that can take some interesting turns. In this cake it pairs with white pepper, lending a gentle clean heat to its own alluring fire. Then a fresh lemon glaze brightens the finish of our White Pepper and Ginger Lemon Cake. Together, the light color and medley of flavor notes offers a unique riff on a classic holiday gingerbread.

Despite a long list of to-dos, I made time to indulge in a blissful gray morning that just begged for Gingerbread Pancakes. Spicy but not too rich, these were just the thing to capture the grace and wonder of the holiday season.

A small glass bowl filled with Peppernuts (Pfeffernuesse), a spicy bite-sized cookie.

Pfefferneusse (Peppernuts)

Easy to make, wonderfully fragrant and delicious, these are now a holiday favorite at our house. To make these little Peppernuts I doubled the quantity of ground spices in the original recipe and added some clear sugar crystals for sparkle and crunch. Try these little bite-sized cookies to enjoy the flavor and fragrance of the season.
