In Lausanne, Switzerland, along Place St-François, the cobblestone sidewalks are punctuated with sidewalk cafes and shops offering sweet confections.
On this gray spring morning, I am looking through photos I took in Switzerland last summer. Just scrolling through the pictures I can feel the sunshine on my skin and remember the luscious summer weather on the shores of Lac Léman (or Lake Geneva). Since I haven’t eaten yet today, I am lingering over pictures of the amazing food we found there too.
Just shopping along the streets of Lausanne is a sweet experience. In the Old Town, along Place St-François and up the Rue de Bourg the cobblestone streets are punctuated with sidewalk cafes and shops offering sweet confections.
Chocolates, macarons and pastries are offered near the square behind the 13th century Église St-François.
One early afternoon we dined at Café Saint Francois beside the lovely Gothic church marking the boundary of old Lausanne, the Vieille Ville.
I had a beautiful bowl of elegant gazpacho garnished with a drizzle of pesto and a sprig of parsley. It was served with breadsticks, as well as a basket of delicious rolls.
My husband settled for a frothy cappuccino and a flaky croissant. He also ordered a chocolate tart to share.
It was delightful to sit in the open café listening to the sounds of the afternoon. The cadence of life felt comfortable, and yet different. On a beautiful day, in this beautiful place, the people around me seemed so fully engaged in the moment. I loved the way we all seemed to linger at our tables, enjoying the food, the drinks and the conversation.
Viva la différence. Vive les vacances.
