Chunky Stovetop Apples

Basically a crustless apple pie, served over pancakes or as a side dish with dinner, Chunky Stovetop Apples add a welcome taste of the season to most any meal.

Chunky Stovetop Apples are basically Apple Pie without the crust. Here it is served in a deep blue bowl.

Apple Pie Flavor in a Side Dish

Apples, like almost every fruit in the Pacific Northwest this year, were late in becoming ready for harvest. The mild spring and summer seasons slowed the ripening significantly. It also decreased the size and maybe even limited the sweetness of the crop. I love tart apples so I am not at all discouraged.

As the weather cools and the leaves turn I begin to crave the fragrance of apples cooking in the kitchen. While it may come late this year I still look forward to a weekend of making Homemade Apple Butter and Applesauce overnight in my slow cooker.

Now that apples are finally dominating the displays at the produce market where I shop, I am delighted. They are beautiful, perhaps even more so because they are fashionably late this year. I think the anticipation has made me appreciate their tart autumn fragrance and deliciously fresh flavor all the more.

Making Apple Butter is both fun and nostalgic but for a smaller dose of apple goodness, and a quicker outcome, it is easy to prepare a quick batch of cooked apples on the stovetop. This recipe produces what is basically a crustless Apple Pie. Served with Overnight Pancakes or as a side dish with Maple Glazed Tenderloin or an Herb Roast Chicken, Chunky Stovetop Apples add a much appreciated taste of the season to most any meal.

Enjoy!
